How to Buy Edible Oils in Bulk: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Ingren Trading Desk · 2 December 2025

Bulk edible-oil procurement rewards buyers who understand specifications. Whether you need refined sunflower, soybean, palm or canola oil, a few key parameters determine quality, compliance and value.

Know your specification

Key quality parameters include free fatty acid (FFA) content, moisture and impurities, peroxide value and Lovibond colour. Always buy against a written specification and insist on a Certificate of Analysis from an accredited lab.

Choose the right packaging

Options range from 1L and 5L retail PET bottles through 20L jerry cans, 200L drums and IBC totes to bulk flexitanks (around 24 MT in a 20-foot container). Flexitanks offer the lowest cost per tonne for large volumes.

Plan for shelf life and storage

Refined oils typically keep 12-24 months when stored cool, dark and sealed. Confirm production date and remaining shelf life on arrival, and store away from heat and sunlight.

Lock in logistics

Decide early between FOB, CIF and DDP, confirm loading capacity per container, and ensure phytosanitary and halal certificates where your market requires them.
